Haida Bucks Cafe, a very small company on a remote island in Canada was threatened with civil suit by Starbucks® for alleged trademark infringement. In truth, it was a nuisance suit, filed in the hopes the cafe couldn't afford legal representation, and would capitulate. In keeping with our company's focus on small business, Lane volunteered to build a web site to promote Haida Bucks' cause. After discussing concept and tone of the site with the owners, Lane designed and built the site, designed the logos, and wrote the copy. Click here to view. The site continues to receive praise from around the world, and was selected as a Yahoo UK Pick of the Day. We also provided news releases and set up a grass roots support campaign. This work resulted in the Haida Bucks saga running in major-market newspapers throughout Canada, the US and the UK, including Canada's largest newspaper, The Globe & Mail and The Associated Press newswire. Over a period of four months, the site received hundreds of thousands of hits, and generated thousands of e-mails supporting the cause. In the end, Starbucks agreed that there was no infringement and closed the matter. |
